Inground Pool Filters
Inground pool filters should always be purchased with a corresponding pump in mind. If you currently own a pool pump and have no intention of buying another one, make sure to buy a filter that is compatible with it. Here at Poolhub.com, we provide a convenient and easy-to-read buyer's guide for all of our products. The filters guides have recommended pump horsepower, and we strongly suggest sticking with our guidelines.
Inground Pool Filters Must Match the Pool Pumps Fortunately, the premier manufacturers of inground pool filters make product lines that include several filters, all of which are appropriate for pumps of different sizes. The Pentair FNS DE filter, for example, is available in four model numbers, all of which should be used with different pump strengths, ranging from 3/4 HP to two HP.
There are, however, different model numbers that will fit the same pumps. In most cases, the difference lies in the filtering area. A cartridge filter that has more square footage of filter will require less frequent cleaning and replacement. A sand or DE filter with more surface area may need to be backwashed less often.
In ground pool filters that do not match the pumps to which they are attached will not perform properly. If the pump is undersized relative to the filter, the flow of water will not be strong enough. This can result in a damaged pump. An over-sized pump can damage the filter, or even push DE or sand into the swimming area. As you can see, the right pool pump for one system may not be the best fit in another.
