Inground Pool Pumps
Inground pool pumps usually require more horsepower than pumps designed for above-ground pools, although some of the leading manufacturers have been able to maximize efficiency and improve the rate of water flow without using additional power. In general, inground pools hold more water and have greater resistance to flow than above-ground pools. This is why pumps typically used for above-ground pools are often inadequate for inground pools.
The leading inground pool pumps are made by Hayward, Pentair, and STA-RITE. Hayward's selection includes efficiency pumps, which are specially engineered to move more water using less energy, and high-performance pumps, which are ideal for the most demanding installations. The Hayward Super II series is the latest Hayward invention. The horsepower on these pumps range from 3/4 HP to three HP.
When shopping for inground pool pumps online, be sure to check the port size. If you have a standard two-inch port, for example, the Pentair Challenger pump might be appropriate for your system, but the Pentair Pinnacle, which has a 1 1/2" port, will not. The reason so many pumps are available is because not all of them are appropriate for every owner.
