Filter Cartridges
One of the main advantages of filter cartridges is ease of maintenance. Sand and DE filters require regular backwashing. Under normal circumstances, a cartridge filter needs to be cleaned only once or twice each year. If you have an undersized cartridge or an over-sized pump, the filter may require more frequent cleaning.
The pressure gauge is the best indicator of when the cartridge should be cleaned. Once the gauge reads eight PSI greater than the clean-filter pressure, which varies from one filter to the next, it needs to be cleaned. Filter cartridges must be cleaned from top to bottom using a strong garden hose. High water pressure is desirable. Some filter manufacturers even sell their own cleaning wands. You can brush the cartridge, but do so gently to avoid damaging the filter media. Make sure to spray water in between the cleats to get rid of any accumulated debris.
Suntan oil and sunblock may form an oily residue on cartridge pleats. If you notice mineral deposits, use a 20 percent muriatic acid and water solution (a one to one ratio) and soak the cartridge. Rinse the cartridge thoroughly with water before returning it to the filter canister.
