Pool Filters Overview

There are three basic types of pool filters, the strongest of which is the diatomaceous earth (DE) filter. A DE filter can cleanse your pool of any dirt particles that are three microns in size or bigger. To give you an idea of how small a three-micron particle really is, a grain of table salt is 80 microns, and anything smaller than 35 microns is invisible to the naked eye. DE filters require some maintenance, such as an occasional backwash to cleanse the filter.

Cartridge pool filters are only slightly less powerful than DE filters. Cartridge filters often consist of four different filtering components. Dirty pool water flows through a series of fabrics that are similar to polyester, and any particles greater than five or ten microns gets trapped in the filter. One of the greatest advantages of a cartridge filter is its ease of maintenance. It takes only a few minutes to clean.

Sand filters have been keeping swimming pools clean for decades. The jagged edges of sand, which are difficult to see without the help of a magnifying glass or microscope, catch dirt particles as water passes through the filter. A sand filter is usually the most inexpensive option. Sand filters must be cleaned from time to time, and the most common method is backwashing.
