Solar Pool Heaters
Solar pool heaters can lengthen the swimming season by warming the water as early as possible in the spring and maintaining a comfortable temperature well into the fall. Solar heaters often cost a lot of money, but in the long run, they operate more efficiently than gas and electrical pool heaters. Solar heaters use energy directly from the sun, which, of course, is free.
Solar collectors, which are long, flat panels made from polypropylene or thermoplastic rubber, absorb sun rays and capture solar energy. Most solar pool heaters come with thermometers that gauge the temperature of the pool and the collectors. When the difference between the two reaches a significant level, a pump pushes the water through the solar collectors. The water reenters the pool several degrees warmer than its previous temperature.
Because solar pool heaters receive energy from the sun, a solar collector located in a shady area will not be effective. The ideal location receives at least six hours of direct sunlight between eight AM and four PM on a daily basis. The solar panels should face directly south for optimal performance, but 10 degrees east or west will not noticeably hinder efficiency. The angle at which a solar collector should be tilted depends on location. As a general rule, use your geographic latitude minus ten degrees.
