Swimming pool filters eliminate microscopic pollutants naked to the human eye. Filters operate on their own, but they do require some maintenance. Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters and sand filters must be backwashed. Whenever you backwash a DE filter, the old DE must be replaced. Cartridge filters should be hose washed once each year, and the filter unit itself should be thoroughly cleaned.

As with most pool accessories, filters come with owner's manuals that can help troubleshoot problems. For example, if sand is making its way back into the pool, the manual can inform you whether or not the sand is too fine for your particular filter. Another possible cause would be that too much sand was placed in the filter. One thing to keep in mind, however, is the fact that some chlorine tablets will leave residue that may look like sand.
